Non-profit and independent labs do AI research outside companies and government departments, often on public-interest questions such as security, safety and fairness. The Alan Turing Institute, which calls itself the national institute for data science and AI, works on AI assurance and security, including a fairness toolkit for small firms, and builds the FastNet weather model with the Met Office. The AI Biosecurity Lab, announced in October 2026, is an independent non-profit studying AI-related biological threats, backed by £100 million of government money and up to £200 million from OpenAI and Anthropic.
