General-purpose AI models, also called foundation models, are large systems trained on very large amounts of text, images, sound and code, which can then be adapted to many tasks, from chat to coding. On this tile Google DeepMind builds the Gemini family, the open Gemma models and the Genie "world models", which generate playable environments; the tile lists 63 models and products from DeepMind, Locai, Recursive and Stability AI (per the site). The UK's competition regulator, the CMA, has reviewed how these models affect competition and consumers since 2023.

Context

  1. The Competition and Markets Authority published its first report on foundation models and proposed principles for competitive AI markets. 18 September 2023 gov.uk/government/news/proposed-principles-to-guFMs are artificial intelligence (AI) systems with broad capabilities that can be adapted to a range of different
  2. The CMA followed with an update report on foundation models. 11 April 2024 gov.uk/cma-cases/ai-foundation-models-initial-reUpdate report published
